Saints Fall in Regional Final

An impressive run through the Midwest Regional Tournament came to end Saturday for St. Scholastica as they fell 21-13 to Wisconsin Whitewater in a slugfest. By eliminating the Saints the Warhawks move on to the Division III College World Series in Grand Chute, WI next week.

The Saints finish their season with a record of 35-6 and leave the regional with their best showing ever going 3-2 and eliminating Knox College, Carthage College, and the University of St. Thomas along the way.

Three Saints were named to the Midwest Regional All-Tournament team. Senior Blake Eller was named the tournament MVP and was joined by sophomores Sean Claugherty and Steve Gerten.

Saints Advance to Regional Championship Game

The St. Scholastica Saints will play UW-Whitewater at noon on Saturday in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional baseball tournament in Oshkosh. The Saints are 2-1 in tournament play and will need to beat the undefeated Warhawks twice to advance to the College World Series. Tune in to The Fan 560 to follow all the action. Undefeated Run Through UMAC Tourney for CSS

The St. Scholastica Saints (32-4) won their 12th consecutive postseason league title by crushing all three of their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponents on Thrusday and Friday.

In game one of the tournament on Thursday afternoon the Saints took on Martin Luther College. Although CSS struggled offensively to score runs they got a strong pitching performance and played solid defense to earn the win 5-0. Starting pitcher Steve Gerten scattered nine hits and struck out 10 Knights hitters en route to a complete game victory.

The Saints scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two run triple by Mike Lewis who then scored on an error. Knights pitcher Zach Pudlo held the Saints in check until the bottom of the seventh when they tallied two more runs to put the game away. Brian Marshik also had two hits and an RBI for St. Scholastica.

After upsetting second seeded Bethany Lutheran in their first game, Northland College took on the Saints in the nightcap on Thrusday.

Peter Burg (10-0) picked up the win going six innings and striking out eight Northland hitters.

The offense rolled pounding out 16 hits while scoring 14 times. Senior Steve Kraushaar had a great night at the plate recording four hits including two home runs and driving in six. Sean Claugherty also had four hits and a homer, giving him nine for the season which ties him with Kraushaar for the team lead.

Friday's championship match-up slated the undefeated Saints versus Bethany Lutheran who were able to come through the losers bracket to reach the finals. St. Scholastica scored early and often including two runs in the first, five in the fourth, and six in the sixth and ended the night winning 20-7. Sean Claugherty continued his hot hitting as he picked up three more hits and scored three runs. The first four hitters in the Saints lineup scored twelve runs and were a combined 11-for-22 at the plate.

On the mound Adian Kummet battled a tough Bethany lineup and prevailed with his seventh win of the season. Kummet struck out six before giving way to Dan Lanari. Matt Lewis and Brandon Fritz also pitched an inning each in relief.

With the end of the regular season and conference tournament and the Saints ranked 21st in the nation, they must now wait until Sunday to find out if they will be included in the NCAA National Tournament to begin next week.

Saints Capture 12th Straight UMAC Title

The St. Scholastica Saints (29-4, 17-1 UMAC) won their 12th straight UMAC regular season title and extended their winning streak to 10 by taking both ends of a doubleheader versus Bethany Luthern Sunday at Wade Stadium by scores of 3-0 and 15-3.

Starting pitcher Peter Burg dominated on the mound firing a complete game, two hit shutout to pick up his ninth win of the season in game one. Burg struck out seven Bethany hitters.

The Saints offense was slowed by a strong outing by Bethany starter Ashton Dorris but CSS was able to score single runs in the first, third and sixth innings to get the win. Blake Eller was 3-for-3 and had two stolen bases and a run scored. The two steals give Eller 22 swipes for the season.

In game two, the Scholastica bats came alive as every starter had at least one hit and they pounded out 19 hits as a team. Eller and Darrin Carlson each had two hits and drove in three and Carlson recorded his fifth homer of the season on a deep drive to left in the fourth inning. Brian Marshik also had three hits and scored two runs.

Adian Kummet fired five innings and fanned seven hitters while only giving up three hits to record his sixth win.

The two wins concluded the regular season for the Saints, who by capturing the conference title also gained the #1 seed in the upcoming UMAC Tournament to be played at Wade Stadium on Thursday and Friday.


Win Streak Extended to Eight

The St. Scholastica Saints (27-4, 15-1 UMAC) won their eighth straight game at a cold and windy Wade Stadium Thursday night beating Martin Luther College 11-0.

Steve Gerten improved his record to 3-0 on the year by pitching five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five. Reliever Ben Sartori came on in the sixth and maintained the shutout bid by surrendering three hits, no walks and recording a pair of strikeouts.

The Saints offense scored four runs in the third and added five more in the fourth to blow the game open. Sean Claugherty was 4-for-4 and scored three runs and seniors Darrin Carlson and Mike Lewis also added two hits for the Saints.

Games scheduled for the weekend against Bethany Luthern have been changed due to poor weather. Friday's night game has been pushed to Saturday and the doubleheader scheduled for Saturday will now be played Sunday. Game times will depend on the weather.


Offense Leads Saints to Win Over Northland

St. Scholastica won their seventh straight game Tuesday afternoon beating Northland College 18-6 in a seven inning game in Ashland, WI.

The top three hitters in the Saints order were 10-for-15 on the day and drove in 11 runs between them. Steve Kraushaar had three hits including two homeruns and drove in four, Blake Eller scored four runs, had three hits, including a homer, and had three RBIs, and Sean Claugherty had four hits and four RBIs.

Josh Hawkins got the win in relief of starter Jake Wendland. Hawkins hurled four and two thirds, struck out four, allowed two runs and picked up his third win of the year. Jake Gaub pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

The Saints move to 26-4 on the year and 14-1 in the UMAC.

The next scheduled game is Thursday night at 7:30 pm versus Martin Luther at Wade Stadium.


Two More UMAC Wins for Scholastica

The St. Scholastica Saints picked won a pair of wins Sunday night in the Metrodome defeating Minnesota-Morris 12-2 and 2-0.

Game one starter Peter Burg picked up his eigth win of the season throwing six innings before giving way to Adian Kummet who closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.

The Saints were powered offensively by homeruns by Steve Kraushaar and Sean Claugherty.

In game two, Matt Lewis hurled five strong innings to pick up the win and Dan Lanari pitched the last two innings to get the save. Darrin Carlson had the game winning RBI for the Saints.

St. Scholastica improves to 25-4 on and season and is now 13-1 in the UMAC Conference.

** Schedule Updates The Saints will travel to Ashland, WI on Tuesday to play Northland College in a nine inning game at 3:00 pm. Thursday, Martin Luther will take on CSS at Wade Stadium in a nine inning contest starting at 7:30 pm.
