THIS WEEK IN SFL BASEBALL - FINAL WEEK

After a strong regular season performance the Black Sox continued their roll in the playoffs to earn the SFL World Series victory.

Steve Gerten, Nick Lee, and Jake Gaub were crowned the SFL MVPs as the Black Sox claimed their 10th SFL title in the last 11 years.

BLACK CLINCHES REGULAR SEASON TITLE
The Black sox clinched the 2008 SFL regular season title Wednesday night by beating both Gold and Blue in single game contests. The SFL Play-Offs begin Friday night with the Blues at Gold Diggers in the opening game of a best of three. The winner of that series will then face the Black Sox in the best of three SFL World Series. Black has been led by Nick Lee who is batting .419 with 16 RBI and Steve Gerten (.412, 9 RBI).

THIS WEEK IN SFL BASEBALL - SEPT. 16, 2008

The Black Sox swept a triple header Tuesday night at Wade beating the Gold Diggers twice and the Blues once. The victories give the Black Sox a comfortable lead (standings on left) heading into another week of play.

Now that each team has played at least 12 games, some positionals have as many as 30 at-bats, and most pitchers have made three starts. And at the half-way point in the season, the surprising Gold Diggers sat at the top the 2008 SFL standings before losing twice to the Black Sox on Tuesday. Gold has been led offensively by Paul Kolodge (.462) and 2008 NCAA All-American Sean Claugherty (.412). Both Claugherty (Tartan HS) and Kolodge (Cloquet) are juniors, and Dan Lanari is the only senior on the Gold Squad. Gold GM Justin Harriman also has more money ($15 million) left under the salary cap than any other team. The start of a new dynasty?

SFL Analyst Dr. Tony Barrett:
"Only three pitchers have two wins; Kummet, Burg, and Wendland. Based on stats, those three guys plus Gerten, Barningham, and Gaub are the favorites to pitch against the Alumni. That would be two pitchers from each team, but all six would have to have short outings in order to not compromise the SFL integrity...Paul Kolodge (.625) is the only player with an on-base percentage above .500; Gerten and Marshik are close...Black still has the best offense in the league while the Blues are buried in last. Based on runs scored per game: Black 3.00, Gold 2.50, Blues 1.43.

THIS WEEK IN SFL BASEBALL - SEPT. 10, 2008

With 11 games played in the first week of the 2008 SFL season, the standings board in the Saints' clubhouse at Wade Stadium shows a dead heat. With all three teams at .500, it seems the three GMs have managed to draft and trade their way to highly competitive balance.

But it was all Blues early on as Kyle Wojtysiak towering two-run homer broke up a pitchers' duel between the Blues' Peter Burg and Black Sox' Steve Gerten on Opening Day. At one point during week one, the Blues opened up a two-game lead, but when Gold Digger Jake Wendland out-pitched Burg for a 1-0 Gold win in Sunday's finale, the standings are all square with each team having played at least 7 games.

Junior Steve Gerten (Henry Sibley HS) leads the SFL offensively with 6 hits and 6 RBI while junior Sean Claugherty (Tartan HS) has gone deep over Wade's 15-foot right-field wall twice and is now batting .417 for the fall. Gerten (13 Ks), Burg (12Ks), and senior Adian Kummet (9Ks) have led SFL pitchers.

SFL Analyst Dr. Tony Barrett:
"It's rather difficult to study these rosters and not pick the Black Sox to win the SFL Cup; Black clearly has the most productive line-up and the best defense. Black is also the only team that helped itself at all with the draft; Blue and Gold both made some poor selections. The only challenge Black will have is that the Blue rotation at the top (Burg, Kummet, Lewis) is better than theirs."
